Background info on the Link Wray FIRE AND BRIMSTONE song featured in the upcoming film LAWLESS,
"When I’m Sixty Four"
LINK WRAY - 1993
Watch the world record breaking 20 guitar jam of Rumble by Link Wray!
PHATLYNX - The World’s Heaviest Link Wray Tribute band! Dig it!
Link Wray’s “I’m So Glad, I’m So Proud” from his 1973 album “Beans and Fatback” is the shit. It was recorded in 1971 by Link’s brother Vernon in a chicken shack (Link’s Three Track Studio) on Wray’s Accokeek, Maryland farm. My favorite ’70s Link Wray is his self titled 1971 “Link Wray” featuring the masterpiece “La De Da” (a song the “Exile”-era Stones had to have heard) but this one is a whole lot of hot damn! Link was boss in every era he played and he left us too soon. Screw Clapton. Link Wray is God.
LINK WRAY DESERVES BETTER THAN THIS
I am a long time record collector. Whenever possible I prefer a physical copy of music…LP or CD…cracking open that plastic, reading the liner notes, checking out pics I’ve never seen before…you know the deal.
I recently picked up two “new” Link Wray CDs on Amazon.com - “Moonlight Walk” and “Young Love”. The Amazon ad said they were from “Mocking Bird”. A quick check of Google…nothing on “Mocking Bird”…so I kinda had an idea what I’d be getting.
It was even worse that I expected.
I didn’t get CDs…I got cheap CD-r discs printed by Amazon on Demand.
ZERO liner notes - check! ZERO pictures of Link - check! ZERO songwriting credits, publishing house information, song times - check!
And of course, ZERO information on the Mocking Bird company. No company address, no company website, no company email, no company phone number. Hmmm…..
The CD…er, CD-r covers? They are blatantly copied from legitimate Link Wray recordings that have already been released.
"Moonlight Walk" is copied from the Chiswick / Ace Records album "Link Wray Early Recordings" that was released decades ago. "Young Love" is clearly copied from the far superior "Slinky! The Epic Sessions" CDs on Sundazed.
A five year old with a computer and five minutes with Photoshop can do a better job.
Let’s get to the LINK WRAY music! You guessed it, It’s all been released before - on the far superior Link Wray CD set “Slinky! The Epic Sessions” released on Sundazed Records.
The fine folks at Mocking Bird inserted a little twist here though…instead of correctly listing the song titles, they actually CHANGE the song names! The alternate take of ”Lillian” becomes “Lillian My Sun”. ”Right Turn” alternate take becomes “Right Turn Left”. (????) An honest mistake or an attempt to get someone to download a “new” unreleased Link song? Draw your own conclusion.
Link Wray deserves better. Amazon and iTunes should know better.
Put your hard earned money to better use. Go to the original source. Pick up the far superior Link Wray “Slinky!” CD set on Sundazed.
